Mr. Gary Bushby
The Guidance Department of F.K. Sweet Magnet Elementary offers many different services for students. Students can receive guidance lessons that are taught at selected grade levels based on teachers’ requests. Goal setting, career awareness, anger management, problem solving, completing assignments, decision making, creative thinking, and peer pressure are examples of lessons that may be taught. In addition, individual counseling based on need and teacher or parent requests, the guidance department may help students deal with a variety problems that a student faces at school or home.
Meeting the social and academic needs of students are the main objectives of the Guidance Department at F.K. Sweet. The Guidance Department facilitates meetings between parents and teachers through the Multi-Tiered Student System. Students’ academic and social progress is addressed through the MTSSS to help parents and teachers work in a cooperative fashion to help students reach their potential. The Guidance Department is also responsible for handling all referrals for cognitive as well as educational achievement for the Exceptional Student Education program.
Working with students to build self-esteem, independence, and a feeling for community service, the Guidance Department helps oversee students’ participation in the Student Council, the United Way, and its annual food drive. Recognizing student achievement with Star Student of the Month and Honor Roll helps the Guidance Department emphasize a student’s self-worth.
