The dance curriculum provides the students with experiences in understanding the elements of dance: time, space, flow and force. This class will allow students to explore how their body creates movement and its use as an instrument for non-verbal communication. Students will also explore a variety of dance forms including ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and creative movement.
The goal of the dance program is to provide for systematic development of technical skills, kinesthetic awareness, and effective performance. The progam emphasizes the development of a positive self-concept through the use of the body in motion. The beginning grades become acquainted with warm-ups, floor work, loco motor patterns, and skills such as the skip, hop, leap, prance, gallop and slide. Upper grades continue to work on the basic skills while emphasizing the refinement of technical abilities. There is more opportunity for students to compose and perform in small groups or solo. The dance program also works to increase endurance, flexibility, coordination, strengths, and muscle tone.
