Reading on the Lawn at Lawnwood

First Grade Students of Lawnwood are learning how magnifiers make things appear bigger and help people see things they could not see without them. (SC1E5.3)Students were engaged as they explored different areas around the campus.
Lawnwood students enjoyed guest reader day. Local members of the Daughters of the American Revolution read If I Had Your Vote by Dr. Seuss to celebrate reading.
Students from Mrs. Hammett’s class and Ms. McGowan’s class are using an incubator to incubate avian embryos growing inside fertile eggs. Through this project students are learning biology and life science as they eagerly look forward to hatching chicks.
Lawnwood Teachers are using technology to enhance instruction. Ms. Bellone uses the smartboard to help students as they use number lines to deepen their understanding of fractions.
Lawnwood teachers provide students with hands-on science inquiry lessons. Ms. Jacob’s fifth grade students are learning how heat and pressure can change rocks. Students applied heat and pressure to starburst candies which deepened their understanding of weathering and erosion.
Lawnwood Leopards are learning how to use rhythm sticks to keep a steady beat. Ms. Evans, Music Teacher, is teaching second grade students how to sing Native American songs and use the rhythm sticks to enhance their fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, and directionality skills. GO LEOPARDS!
To celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy, Lawnwood Leopards participated in a week of kindness. The staff and students of Lawnwood Elementary donated 1,266 pairs of socks to the Salvation Army. In the media center, students were learning to use text features included in biographies to gain knowledge about famous Americans. Way to go Leopards!
Students from Ms. Carmona’s first grade class and fromMrs. Chenette’s second grade class wrote thank you letters to US soldiers in the Middle East.We are thankful for our US Military.
