According to Title 10, Section 2031[1] of the United States Code, the purpose of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is “to instill in students in [the United States] secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.”[2] Additional objectives are established by the service departments of the Department of Defense. Under 542.4[3] of Title 32 (National Defense) of the Code of Federal Regulations, the Department of the Army has declared those objectives for each cadet to be:
- Developing citizenship and patriotism
- Developing self-reliance and responsiveness to all authority
- Improving the ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
- Developing an appreciation of the importance of physical fitness
- Increasing a respect for the role of the U.S. Armed Forces in support of national objectives
- Developing a knowledge of team building skills and basic military skills
- Taking 1–3 years of the course grants cadets the ability to rank higher if they pursue a military career.
Honor Unit with Distinction
Cadets in the 2021-2022 school year were awarded a gold star for the unit’s achievement in earning the title “Honor Unit with Distinction”. An Honor Unit with Distinction (HUD) is one that has demonstrated exceptional performance in all areas of the program operations. To be awarded this rating, a JROTC program must score at least 95% in JROTC Program for Accreditation (JPA). In 2022, the Jaguar Battalion received a score of 98.5% in the JPA. In 2020, the Jaguar Battalion received a 99% score on the overall evaluation.
JROTC Mission
The U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is one of the largest character development and citizenship programs for youth in the world. The JROTC curriculum provides equitable and challenging academic content and authentic learning experiences for all Cadets.
All lessons are designed using a four-part model to motivate the Cadet, allow the Cadet to learn new information, practice competency, and apply the competency to a real-life situation. Moreover, the four-part model requires Cadets to collaborate, reflect, develop critical thinking skills, and integrate content with other disciplines. JROTC curriculum includes lessons in leadership, health and wellness, physical fitness, first-aid, geography, American history and government, communications, and emotional intelligence. The curriculum is rigorous and relevant to 21st century education. In fact, many high schools grant core credits for some of the subjects taught in JROTC. Our curriculum meets the standards of Common Core State Standards and in many states, it aligns with Career and Technical Education clusters. Cadets learn and apply the curriculum using technology in the classroom. Cadets also participate in a myriad of co-curricular activities to demonstrate their attainment of lesson outcomes. Some of these activities include precision and exhibition military drill competitions, air rifle competitions, Raider Challenge competitions, JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB), and a physical fitness competition known as JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC). Cadets who complete four years of JROTC co-curricular activities and its challenging curriculum will be more college and/or career ready.
PSLHS Army JROTC Instructors DO NOT RECRUIT OR SEND Cadets/Students to any Military Service.
